RE: Washington's Olympic Peninsula Free Campgrounds

Brauneyz, If you go farther north I would recommend Salt Creek County Park. It is outside of Joyce and has pull thru ocean front (Strait of Juan de Fuca) sites with full hook-ups.

RE: Driving on pismo beach sand

Kerry1 There are pull thru spaces in Oceano with electric and water, no sewer, and long enough for a 38 ft DP.

RE: The U.S. is doomed, or atleast I am........

Pickel, What I recommend is that you and your wife keep a notebook and you both write down EVERYTHING you spend money on. Do this for at least a month then sit down with your wife and see what you bought and how much you spent. Most people who do this discover that they buy many things that they didn't really need. Good luck to you...

RE: Anyone selling because of gas prices?

4 years ago we sold the travel trailer and moved to a vacation destination. We can set crab pots, dig for clams, fish for salmon, and kayak just out our front door. The Olympic Mountains are within 30 miles. Today I bought a "commuter bicycle" so I can pedal to town (15 miles round trip). We now use the truck mainly to tow the horse trailer and we horse camp locally. If we want to spend the night we take a tent. How far you need to drive to work and to the market will become very BIG issues within a few years.

RE: I bought a Toyota Yaris

We have a 2002 Honda Civic LX with a 5 speed. Around town (we live in the country so there are few stop signs and no stop and go traffic) it gets 39 MPG. On the freeway at 60 it averages in the mid 40's ond has gotten as good as 50 MPG. The Yaris is a well built car. Every time gas goes up a time it's re-sale value increases....

RE: silverado diesel VS new hybrid

The re-sale value of used diesel trucks have tanked in my area. The Blue Book may say your truck is worth X amount but try and sell it for that price and you will be sitting by a phone that does not ring...

RE: silverado diesel VS new hybrid

Unless you are planning on driving thousands of miles every year and/or want to tow a big trailer get a gas V-8. We enjoy the power of our diesel but it is no longer worth the extra up front ($6000+)cost PLUS the more expensive fuel. Several people have pointed out that it takes a long time to break even on a Hybrid. The same is now true for a diesel. We pay $4.42 a Gallon here for diesel and $3.85 for gas. You have a light camper so why pay for something you don't need? Our next truck will be a standard cab V-8.

RE: Washington State Campgrounds

The Sequim Irrigation festival is today and tomorrow. Sequim Bay State Park has full hookup sites. Fort Worden Park in Port Townsend is really nice. If you have kids they can climb all over the old coastal gun pits and ammo bunkers (bring a flashlight)

RE: We just saved a ton of money on college tuition....

He didn't enlist for the money. He did it because he believes that he needed to give something back for all that this nation has given him. Kind of a rare attitude these days.

RE: We just saved a ton of money on college tuition....

The US Army has paid my son $70,000 (GI Bill + Army college fund) for his college eductaion. Add his original $20,000 enlistment bonus and after his discharge he had no problem paying his own way through college. P.S. The GI Bill and the additional money from the Army collge fund are both tax free.

RE: GAS Prices!!! I sold my rig, my F-250 is next

If the RV and tow veh were free than it would be cheaper to camp then to motel it. My Honda civic gets 40 - 50 mpg on the freeway and the Dodge gets 15 (if I'm lucky) towing the trailer. The truck and camper cost close to $60,000. At $2000 a week that's 30 weeks of vacation. Factor in insurance, fuel, scheduled services and a campsite and I suspect that it costs several hundred a night to travel in the RV. There are many reasons to RV but saving money isn't one of them.

RE: Giving a statement (Update page #3)

If your son turned in front of on coming vehicle he is at fault, right of way violation. A police report wouldn't have made a difference and due to the cost factor many departments won't take one unless there are injuries. Good luck but new drivers (as well as old ones) make mistakes. That's why we have insurance.

RE: Are we coming to the "end" of a lifestyle??

Our grandkids won't know what a "Sunday Drive" was nor will they "See the USA in a Chevrolet." Our lifestyle is and will change but this has happened before. It wasn't all that long ago that the "RV lifestyle" involved a covered wagon, the Oregon Trail, and a team of oxen.
